Hainan Island of China announces that single-use of non Biodegradable Plastic Bags will phase out starting from year 2020. It becomes one of the first Chinese provinces to set a firm timeline for the environment ban.
As a matter of fact, supermarkets and other big retailers were prohibited to provide free plastic bags to customers in 2007, hoping to reduce plastic use. Meanwhile, campaign of using Non Woven Shopping Bags are widely launched among the public. However, the results turn out to be not as good as expected. Most people opt to pay a few cents for the plastic bag rather than carry their own reusable Non-Woven Tote Bags. Some one suggest that consumers should get a certain discount on the items as “bonus” if they bring their own bag. This policy requires that the supermarket or stores owners are well educated in green awareness. If Confucius' ethics education is not enough, there is only one solution, simple and rude but effective, phase out single-use plastic bags altogether.Strict legislation makes the difference.
In addition, government should provide more support to the production of biodegradable plastics and enhance research and development of biodegradable plastic packaging such as to ensure the success of the shift.
